COMMUNITY

What does "community" mean to you?

The WHO defines community health as:
environmental, social, and economic resources to sustain emotional and physical well being among people in ways that advance their aspirations and satisfy their needs in their unique environment.[1]

In my 12 years of personal training and health management of clients, my own life experiences and those of my family and friends, I can attest to the fact that community plays a huge role in our health period. Let alone Mental Health!

The very first study I ever read about was about a community with very unhealthy eating habits yet they lived longer than most in other countries that lived very healthy lives. The studyy concluded that these folks were just plain HAPPY!

That made me want to learn more!

Sometimes people avoid community for many reasons. But even having a small community of a few people you can turn to even if it's just to share lifes ups and downs can make a huge difference in one's health.

My experience has been that those who workout together, or at least hold each other accountable to workouts, have greater success with their goals.

The same goes with business and personal success. When you have a community of likeminded people you can draw off of each other's energy and bloom!

Community requires give and take. You must also give to those in your community so that you can receive. Many years ago I was told about "energy exchange" and to this day it has held true.

If you continue to give someone something with nothing in return, many times no lesson is learned and nothing is gained. But when something is given in return, whether it's an ear to listen, financial exchange, a lending hand then both parties feel blessed!

I have a few different communities.

I have a business community where many of us have not met in person but we've created beautiful friendships online. We depend on each other for support and help.

I have a local fitness community of five other women and the support and motivation we give each other is priceless!

Many people find their community within thier church. All these people dedicated to each other have been known to have better and happier and longer lives.

So find your community, and if you have one but haven't brought value to your community in a while....I challenge you to give and watch what comes back your way!
