philosophy # 5 - body mass awareness
Body Mass is body fat and lean body mass.
Lean body mass is anything that is not body fat.
We tend to refer to lean muscle mass when speaking of lean body mass since that makes up most of the lean body mass.
Having lean muscle mass will NOT make you look muscular.
Most people do not get enough or enough of the right nutrition for that to happen, nor train hard enough and long enough.
Growing your lean body muscle will do several important things for your health though...
1. It's like a savings account should you ever get ill. Your immune system uses your body's proteins for fuel.
2. Your body burns more calories at all times of the day and night (during sleep too) when you have more muscle mass. Muscle burns more fat than fat burns fat.
3. Muscle takes up about half the space of fat. After a change of body composition from more fat to more muscle, you might weigh the same but have lost many inches.
One way to achieve this is to focus on the most BASIC nutrition information.
There are only 3 things (macro nutrients) that give you (or supply) calories (energy)...
1. Carbs
2. Fat
3. Protein.
All junk food AND healthier food contain these same nutrients.
The most important thing we learn is that a carb is a carb. Ice Cream is not a carb. Ice cream is carbs and fat of the unhealthier version of these macro nutrients.
Peanut butter is mostly a fat item. It does have some carb and some protein but not as much as most people think. It's 3/4 fat! But it's not a bad thing to eat.
All veggies and fruit are also carbs!
It's better to learn about the macro nutrients and how easy it is to differentiate them than it is to lump foods as bad and good.
Most people are not getting enough protein so we make sure we discuss that as well.
That's about as deep as we get into nutrition unless you have more questions.
AND don't forget! Where does fat go when we lose it???
Through our EXHALE during periods of exercise and movement.
