The Five Key Elements of Physical Fitness
1. Cardiovascular endurance - the ability of the heart and lungs to work together to provide the needed oxygen and fuel to the body during sustained workloads. Examples would be jogging, cycling and swimming or simply walking longer distances without feeling winded.
2. Muscular endurance - the ability of the muscles to perform continuously without fatiguing. Examples would be hiking, stair stepping and any activity that requires muslce strength for extended periods. Cutting wood and stacking wood would be another good example.
3. Muscular Strength - the amount of force a muscle can produce. Examples would be the bench press, leg press or bicep curl. The amount of weight that one can lift at one time. It's also being able to carry a large bag of softener salt, dog food etc.
4. Flexibility - the ability of each joint to move through the available range of motion for a specific joint. Examples would be stretching individual muscles. Can you bend over and touch your toes? How about touch fingers behind your back and over your shoulders?
5. Body Composition - the amount of fat mass compared to lean muscle mass, bone and organs. Having an above average amount of lean muscle mass is advantageous to the body for several reasons. Our metabolisim is higher with more lean muscle mass, our immune system uses our muscle for food when we are ill.
